Sitar - The Instrument


The sitar is a stringed instrument from India made from half a seasoned hollowed gourd and a long hollow neck of seasoned tun wood (red ceder or teak wood.

It has 20 movable frets with 6 or 7 metal playing strings on main bridge (jawari) and usually 12 or 13 sympathetic resounding strings on small bridge below. It is finely decorated with carved wood, celluliod (mother of pearl immitation) inlay with fine pen engraving and beads for fine tuning.

Since 1920, when founder Late Pt Rikhi Ram Sharma officially incorporated musical instruments making in Lahore, now in Pakistan, sitar has been the most popular and served instrument with all leading musicians of our country.

Rikhi Ram as a brand has designed and satisfied maestros, music teachers, music students and even western famous musicians like Beatle's-George Harrison and many more with finest sitars for their performances as well as recordings.

The legacy consisting Late Pt Rikhi Ram Sharma (1900-1961) as first generation, followed by Late Pt Bishan Dass Sharma (1929-2007) as second and Shri Sanjay Sharma in this fine art work since 25 years plus, as third generation carrying out same tradition with sincerity and truth.
